What Drives the Cost of Industrial 3D Scanning in Ontario?

A useful budget begins with the project decision, critical interfaces, access conditions and the deliverable the next team will actually use.

“How much does industrial 3D scanning cost?”

The answer depends on what the project needs to capture and what must be delivered afterward.

Two areas of similar floor space can require very different field and office effort. One may be open, accessible and needed only as a registered point cloud. The other may be congested, operating under restricted access and require selected geometry, drawings and verification of critical interfaces.

A useful quotation begins with scope, not square footage alone.

1. Capture boundary and critical interfaces

The size of the area matters, but the capture boundary is more than an outline on a floor plan.

The scope should identify:

  • the equipment, piping, structure and surrounding conditions to include;
  • the interfaces the next project step depends on;
  • required elevations, rooms or exterior areas;
  • installation, removal and maintenance routes;
  • the project reference or coordinate basis; and
  • explicit exclusions.

A focused capture of a congested equipment interface may require more planning and more scan positions than a larger open area.

2. Congestion, visibility and coverage

Industrial areas often contain overlapping piping, platforms, cable tray, guards, insulation and equipment.

Surface-based scanners need a view of the surfaces being recorded. Congestion and obstructions may require additional positions, changes in height or orientation, coordination with site personnel, or another measurement method for selected features.

Moving equipment, traffic, people, steam, dust, reflective surfaces and changing site conditions can also affect capture planning and data review.

The quotation should distinguish between general contextual coverage and critical features that require focused visibility.

3. Access and site conditions

The same capture scope can involve different site requirements.

Cost considerations may include:

  • site orientation, permits and escorts;
  • required personal protective equipment and training;
  • elevated, confined or restricted access;
  • operating windows and production coordination;
  • shutdown, lockout or exposure requirements managed by the site;
  • multiple mobilizations or phased access; and
  • limitations on photography, data handling or equipment use.

These details should be identified early so the field plan reflects actual site conditions.

4. Reference, accuracy and verification requirements

Not every captured surface needs the same treatment.

The quotation may change when the project requires:

  • a defined plant or project coordinate system;
  • control or reference features supplied by others;
  • targeted checks of critical interfaces;
  • supplementary measurements;
  • formal documentation of registration or verification activities; or
  • a more demanding intended use for selected geometry.

The relevant question is not simply “How accurate is the scanner?” It is how the capture, reference, modelling and verification plan will support the intended deliverable.

5. The required deliverable

Field capture is only part of the work.

Possible handoffs include:

  • registered point-cloud files;
  • browser-based or viewer-ready project data;
  • cleaned and segmented point-cloud information;
  • selected dimensions or reference geometry;
  • existing-condition CAD models;
  • plans, sections, elevations or other drawings; and
  • proposed geometry coordinated to the captured condition.

The modelling boundary, level of detail, file formats, software compatibility, drawing requirements, revision cycles and review process all affect office effort.

Scan to CAD” is not a complete deliverable definition. Specify what should become CAD, how it will be represented and what will remain point-cloud reference.

6. Mobilization and project logistics

For work across Ontario, the site location and schedule affect mobilization planning.

Relevant items may include:

  • travel time and distance;
  • lodging or remote-site requirements;
  • shipping or transporting equipment;
  • site access dates and shift windows;
  • weather exposure for exterior work;
  • repeat visits; and
  • coordination with contractors or other project teams.

Combining well-defined adjacent scopes into one visit may change the mobilization profile. It should not be done at the expense of clear capture boundaries and deliverables.

What to provide for a useful quotation

When available, share:

  1. the project objective and downstream user;
  2. site location and desired schedule;
  3. marked-up plans, photographs or a site walkthrough;
  4. the area and systems to include;
  5. critical interfaces and expected accuracy or verification needs;
  6. access, operating and safety constraints;
  7. the required point-cloud, CAD and drawing outputs; and
  8. known exclusions, assumptions and future phases.

If some items are unknown, say so. The quotation can identify assumptions and the information needed to refine them.

The takeaway

Industrial 3D scanning is not priced responsibly by floor area alone.

The main drivers are the capture boundary, congestion and visibility, site access, reference and verification needs, downstream deliverables, and mobilization logistics.

Define those factors first. The resulting quotation will be easier to compare with the actual project need.
